LEGENDARY kwaito star and founding member of Trompies, Eugene Mthethwa is the guest for the MTN SWAMA Awards Nominees’ Launch Party scheduled for Déjà vu Cocktail Lounge, at Esibayeni Lodge on Saturday evening.

Mthethwa will be attending in his capacity as Chairman of the South African Music Industry Council – organisers of the annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

“We are extremely delighted to announce that Eugene will attend Saturday’s event; which is really another milestone towards our much anticipated and talked about awards,” said Melusi Dlamini, Chairman of the MTN SWAMA Awards Committee. He revealed that Mthethwa will be among guest speakers, where he will share lessons from South Africa on how that country’s music industry grew over the last two decades.

“There is a lot the local industry will benefit from interacting with such greats as Mthethwa, as he is among people who championed the paradigm shift from elitist control to mass empowerment of South African artists in that country’s now developed industry. He is very keen to share ideas and even mentor those of us willing to formalise our industry,” said Dlamini. Meanwhile, Swaziland Music and Arts Association (SWAMA) President Lutfo Dlamini has revealed that his association is looking into signing a memorandum of understanding between SWAMA and the South African Music Industry Council.

Dlamini said Mthethwa’s visit to Swaziland this weekend will see the two entities engaging in intensive talks, where areas of collaboration would be identified, and synergies established.

“Mthethwa has assured us that he wishes to see the Swazi music scene evolving to a formidable industry, given that the kingdom already has vast talent. We are very determined to escalate this relationship to a formal agreement, where mutual areas of growth and collaboration would be discussed,” said Dlamini.

He urged invited artists to attend the Nominees’ Launch party and said those whose management would like to schedule meetings with Mthethwa were free to RSVP on 7632 0150.

Saturday’s event will see the successful nominees for about 17 of the 19 categories being officially unveiled. Some of the categories that have generated a lot of enthusiasm and suspense, following the close of public nomination on April 30, include the Best Newcomer, Best Hip Hop Artist, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Gospel Artist.

The unveiling of the nominees will mark the beginning of an intense voting period, which will be open to the public util August 3.

Winners will then be unveiled at a glittering ceremony scheduled for August 5, at the Royal Swazi Spa Convention Centre.
