MTN SWAMA Awards Committee Reflects on SAMA 23 Nominee Launch
Glitz, glam and all things musical is how one can describe the ambience at the 2017 South African Music Awards Nominee Launch held at Ekhuruleni ICC in Kempton Park last week Thursday.
A delegation from Swaziland, representing the upcoming MTN SWAMA Awards was invited to attend the prestigious event. The delegation consisted of the SWAMA President Mr Lutfo Dlamini, MTN SWAMA Chairman Melusi Dlamini, head of Production Larry Mhlanga and head of Social Media Penny Bouwer. With the upcoming MTN SWAMA awards, the 4 attended the event to get a live feel of what the event would be like, and be inspired to bring Swaziland an event of world class level.
Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini lauded the networking his team established with different players from the South African music industry.
“On arrival at the event, one could feel the buzz in the air. Mingling and rubbing shoulders with people from all walks of the music industry; we had a wonderful opportunity to engage with them about their art, as well as create awareness about Swaziland and our music industry development. From high rolling recording artists, music producers, stable owners, artist managers and the like, we exchanged valuable information and have forged relationships which we believe will be greatly beneficial to our industry,” he said.
“The fact that we were dressed in Swazi regalia made us turn heads as we represented Swaziland very well. Our uniqueness stood out and drew the attention of African dancehall artist, Buffalo Souljah, who joined our table for the duration of the event. Also present with us was Sands, of ‘Tigi’ fame, who has evidently stolen the hearts of many South Africans and fit right in among the stars.” he added.
The SAMA’s Nominee Launch event, themed I Live Music, lived up to its name as the performances were all well-choreographed and each set focused on the music. All speeches made were short and straight to the point, giving way for more music. The event host, Anele Mdoda kept the crowd in stitches with her witty humour; stating that this year the main event will be held at Sun City Resort on May 27, and joking that Durban ICC was tired of having hooligans invading their city, hence the new move.
The list of SAMA23 nominees is dominated by new artists who released their debut or second project in the past year.
Nhlanhla Sibisi, RISA CEO toasted the achievers, saying “This is the year newcomers take most of the limelight undoubtedly. It is truly encouraging to see so many young and new artists dominate the list. It can only bode well for the industry. The future is bright and we couldn’t be happier for them.”
As the MTN SWAMA Music Awards approach, we look forward to an exciting change for the music industry in Swaziland. We endeavour to give our best, and give an awards ceremony like never seen before. We’d like to thank MTN Swaziland once again for their sponsorship and for believing in our industry. A huge thank you to all who have also sent in their nominations for this year’s awards.
